Quality standard for structural parts

Lasershape Ltd — the Nottingham-based CNC profiling specialist (
www.lasershape.com) — has achieved a new quality standard for the laser cutting of CE-marked material for the construction industry. The CE marking of fabricated structural steelwork became mandatory on 1 July, requiring companies such as Lasershape to implement a new quality standard to comply with the Construction Products Regulations.
Company director Mike Ward says: “Before 1 July, there was no legal requirement involving fabricated structural steelwork, but as we are involved extensively in the construction sector — producing parts and assemblies that include staircases and balustrades — we have completed a rigorous process to ensure that we are compliant.”
The CE marking obligation applies not only to items such as steel beams and bolts but also to fabricated elements and systems made from CE-marked products. In the UK, the penalties for non-compliance include suspension notices, prohibition notices, warning notices and applications for forfeiture. For certain offences, the penalties include a fine or imprisonment — or both. Mr Ward adds: “We only buy material that is CE-marked from approved mills, and we now have a BSI-audited process in place for the thermal cutting of CE-marked plate.”
