Japan’s Takata Corporation is to recall several million cars to replace potentially deadly air bags.
Owners of about 7.8 million vehicles in the USA (from 10 car makers) have been urged by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to have the affected airbags fixed.
Inflators in the safety devices can deploy with too much force, spraying shrapnel into the faces of drivers. The defect has been linked to at least four deaths in the USA and numerous injuries.
Takata had previously said it did not agree that a nationwide recall was necessary, saying that the problem only affected “areas of high humidity” . In total, some 16 million cars have been recalled world-wide in recent years for potentially faulty Takata air bags.
