Germany’s Siemens has been selected to supply 7MW turbines for the second phase of Dong Energy’s 330MW Walney Extension Offshore Windfarm, which is located about 19km off the Cumbrian coast.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey said: “This is great news for Britain, showing how our policies have made the UK the best place in the world to invest in offshore wind. It is particularly good news for Hull, where many of the blades for
UK projects will be manufactured and where Siemens is already creating over 1,000 new ‘green’ jobs.”

The project was given the go-ahead in November last year; a joint venture between Danish wind turbine maker Vestas and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the first phase was agreed last month.
