New ‘printer’ slashes lead times at bureauGraphite Additive Manufacturing, an Aylesbury-based 3-D printer materials and service bureau, recently bought another selective laser sintering (SLS) ‘printer’ — a Vanguard from 3D Systems — to support the fast-track service it offers customers in a range of industries.

Graphite AM’s (www.graphite-am.co.uk) managing director, Kevin Lambourne, said: “This new machine and increased capacity will allow us to manufacture more low- to mid-volume production parts as well as increase our R&D capacity.

SLS allows us to make multiple parts in a single build — as many as 3,000 in some cases.

“The new printer will be running graphite- and carbon-reinforced nylons, which produce light-weight and durable parts. Whether its baffles, brackets, water pipes, turbo systems, clips or ducts, valuable weight and time can be saved by using additive manufacturing.

“This technology, which was once used by just a handful of F1 teams, is starting to gain real traction in a wide range of sectors.

"Moreover, advances in SLS materials and post-processing — such as Ultraseal impregnation, EMI shielding and metal plating — are allowing additive manufacturing to be considered for a variety of applications.”
