3-D printing specialist acquiredThe aero-structures supplier Premium Aerotec (www.premium-aerotec.com) has strengthened its position in the additive-manufacturing sector by taking over the 3-D printing specialist Apworks.

Premium Aerotec and Airbus, the previous owner of Apworks (www.apworks.de), have agreed to keep the purchasing price confidential.

Premium Aerotec, which was the first aviation supplier to incorporate 3-D printed titanium components into the structure of aircraft, has full capability throughout the entire additive-manufacturing process chain, from product conception to development and the actual printing process through to the downstream process steps — right up until the qualified parts are handed over to the client.

"Apworks was founded as an Airbus Group spin-off in 2013 with a clear focus on metal additive manufacturing.

Premium Aerotec chairman Thomas Ehm said: “Our investment has created a powerful alliance with Apworks, opening up all of the opportunities in additive manufacturing for both current and future clients.”

Joachim Zettler, managing director of Apworks, said: “With Premium Aerotec coming on board, we can take a huge step closer to our vision of industrial mass production using additive-manufacturing technology.

"The aim is to combine Apworks’ highly dynamic approach in solving the issues posed by our clients’ additive-manufacturing questions with Premium Aerotec’s decades of production experience to elicit maximum benefit for our clients from each and every industry, throughout the entire additive-manufacturing value-added chain.”

Premium Aerotec generated revenues of 2 billion euros in 2017. The company’s core business lies in the development and production of metal and carbon fibre composite aircraft structures.

The company has sites in Augsburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Nordenham and Varel in Germany, plus Braşov in Romania.
