The basis of the XHeadClamp system for sliding-head lathes from Sheffield-based Ceratizit WNT (www.wnt.com) is the modular interface between the square tool shank and the interchangeable cutting heads.

These come with a number of different insert pockets that allow various turning, grooving and threading applications to be undertaken.

As a result, once a batch of components has been machined, it is a simple procedure to either refresh an existing tool or change the style of insert completely.

Typically, a single screw secures the head in place; with this removed, the head can be exchanged in a matter of seconds. As long as the new head contains an insert with the same nose radius, the co-ordinate/datum points
of the tool will be the same, making programming straightforward.

Process security is assured, as it is impossible to fit the head incorrectly.

The versatility of the system means that it can be used with various insert dimensions and geometries “within the same system size” — regardless of whether positioning is required on the left or right.

WNT plans to develop the XHeadClamp range further with the addition of through-tool coolant.

The company says that all current and future developments will offer full compatibility.
