Racing around Birmingham againWhen the Formula 3000 Super Prix was staged in Birmingham between 1986 and 1990, it attracted crowds of thousands.

Now, West Midlands Mayor Andy Street says he is in “advanced talks” about staging a 2019 leg of the all-electric Formula E series.

He said the “symbolic” event, featuring battery-powered racing cars, would put Birmingham alongside the likes of Paris, Berlin and Zurich.

“Like many Brummies, I remember the original Super Prix fondly. Photos and footage from those events have become almost part of folklore.”

He said no deal had yet been finalised, but he was optimistic that it would happen.

A Formula E spokesperson said it is a “priority to bring a race back to British soil.

“We want to find the right venue for the long term. We are currently evaluating a number of options, and Birmingham is one of them.”
