Dutch keg maker opens UK plantLightweight Containers, a Dutch-based maker of kegs for the drinks industry, has opened its first manufacturing plant in the UK. Located in Seaham, County Durham, the 62,000ft2 plant is expected to create about 35 jobs within two years.

Chief technical officer Ruud Bais said: “We’ve been searching for a suitable site for several months, and we were particularly impressed by the commitment and desire of Business Durham to attract us to the area.

"They showed us that there was a skilled pool of labour and good transport links. We look forward to a long-lasting relationship with them, as our business develops.”

Carl Marshall, a member of Durham County Council’s economic regeneration cabinet, said: “It is great to see another company choosing County Durham as a place to expand; this reinforces our growing reputation as a desirable location for business.”

Lightweight Containers currently operates production plants in the Netherlands, Germany and the USA (www.lightweight-containers.com).

The UK plant is part of the firm’s effort to meet growing demand for its products, which provide a lightweight plastic alternative to the traditional steel kegs and are said to be 100% recyclable.
