Mahle Powertrain increases supportNorthampton-based Mahle Powertrain (www.mahle-powertrain.com), a global leader in engine development and consultancy, has increased its support for the Institute of Mechanical Engineers’ (IMechE) Formula Student by pledging to sponsor three of the teams entering this year’s event.

It has decided to back Cardiff Racing, The University of Birmingham Racing and Team Bath Racing Electric. All three teams have strong Formula Student credentials.

Cardiff is looking to retain its 2017 crown; Birmingham was the runner-up in 2017; and Bath was the most successful UK electric team in last year’s competition.

Simon Reader, engineering director at Mahle Powertrain, said: “We have been a long-time supporter of the Formula Student competition, and we are delighted to be able to offer our support to three of the most exciting teams taking part.

“Some of the concepts that come out of the event are really eye-catching and showcase what aspiring engineers can bring to the table.

"There is a big job to be done in terms of engaging young people with engineering, and competitions of this type really help to showcase what can be achieved when young people are given the resources and time to bring their ideas to life.”

As one of Europe’s most established educational engineering competitions, Formula Student sees teams compete to produce a prototype single-seat racing car for autocross or sprint racing; they must also present it to a hypothetical manufacturing firm.

More information about the event, which takes place at Silverstone 11-15 July, can be found at the Web site (www.imeche.org/events/formula-student).
