A major milestone in the project to build a UK ‘state of the art’ polar research ship was reached on 15 July, when the 129m-long hull was launched into the River Mersey for the first time, watched by more than 3,000 shipyard workers, engineers, scientists and maritime industry experts, plus guest speakers including Sir David Attenborough.
Built by Cammell Laird (
www.clbh.co.uk), the ship will be operated by the British Antarctic Survey.
Sir David said: “Britain began exploring the Antarctic over a century ago, when it seemed to be a wilderness of little importance to the world as a whole.
“We now recognise that what happens at the North and South Poles is of the greatest importance to everyone, everywhere.
“This wonderful new research ship will enable British scientists to continue their crucial work for decades to come.”
Bury-based Roxtec UK (
www.roxtec.com), a global leader in the manufacture of innovative cable and pipe transit systems, was chosen to install a range of specialist safety seals in key areas, including the engine room.
They will provide protection from hazards such as fire, water, gas, vibrations, electromagnetic disturbances and explosions.
Managing director Clive Sharp said: “Roxtec was introduced to this ground-breaking project by Norwegian electrical contractor Vard.
“Our sealing solutions offer a number of benefits, including durability, flexibility and simplicity. They are not only quick to install, they are adaptable to cables and pipes of varied sizes, and come with built-in spare capacity for future upgrades.”
