RZD Logistics — the largest multi-modal logistics operator in the CIS and Baltic countries — has launched test multi-modal shipments of cargo from Japan to Russia via the Trans-Siberian railway in containers equipped with temperature, moisture and vibration sensors.

On 17 August, RZD Logistics (www.rzdiog.com) sent a 40ft container from Port Kobe (Japan) to Vostochny Port (Primorskiy Krai, Russia), where it was put on a container train that was scheduled to ‘Transsib’ in seven days.

The container then travelled by ‘local ’ train to Vorsino station (Kaluga region), then by road to the warehouse of a consignee in Khimki town (Moscow region) — for an overall journey time of 14 days.

A second test shipment from Japan to Russia via the Trans-Siberian railway was scheduled to start on 31 August, with RZD Logistics sending a 20ft container using the route Yokohama/Port Vladivostok/Silikatnaya station (Moscow region).

RZD Logistics CEO Viacheslav Valentik said: “This project is a huge ‘logistics step’ for Japanese consignors.

“We are undertaking test shipments that will allow us — together with Japanese colleagues — to choose the optimal route; and by the end of 2018, we will have optimised the transit time.

“The use of temperature, moisture and vibration sensors is important, considering that Japanese companies deliver mostly high-value-added goods.”
