GKN Aerospace (
www.gkn.com) has officially opened its aero-engine systems repair and research facility in Johor, Malaysia.
The company announced the project at the Farnborough Air Show in July and has spent $30 million on the site plus ‘state of the art’ equipment. It says that the expansion in Asia is an important part of its long-term growth strategy and global operating model.
The new facility will initially focus on servicing low-pressure compressor (LPC) components for the CFM56-5B, CFM56-7 and V2500 engines and will start operating in 2019.
The research will focus on the use of additive-manufacturing technology for the repair of engine parts and will complement GKN Aerospace’s component repair facility in San Diego, California.
The support of the Malaysian government and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority was essential in identifying the suitable location.
