Wind turbine pin-pile contract

Wind turbine pin-pile contractThe Danish energy company Orsted (www.orsted.com) has contracted CSBC Corp to provide a “significant number” of foundation pin-piles for the first 900MW of the Greater Changhua offshore wind farm development (off Taiwan).

Local company CSBC (www.csbcnet.com.tw) plans to invest in a new production line to make the pin-piles, and it will use Kaohsiung Harbour as its assembly site. Each pile will be up to 90m long and will weigh 20,000 tonnes.

Orsted Asia-Pacific general manager Matthias Bausenwein said: “We will use Orsted-designed jacket foundations, which
are tailored to meet the sea-bed conditions in Taiwan.

"Each foundation will be supported by three pin-piles that are driven into the sea-bed, forming a robust foundation structure to sustain the weight of the tower and the wind turbine assembly.

"We are glad to have found a partner like CSBC — a company that has many years of experience in heavy industry and shipbuilding.”

Orsted has also contracted Formosa Heavy Industries to supply pin-piles for the project. Offshore construction is expected to start in 2021 on the first 900MW of the Greater Changhua development, which could extend to four sites generating 2.4GW.
