Funding boost for X-ray technology developer

Funding boost for X-ray technology developerCounty Durham-based IBEX Innovations, which has developed a safer X-ray technology, has completed a £1 million funding round that will allow it to bring its systems to market.

The company, which has a facility in Sedgefield, has secured investment from the new North East Venture Fund (NEVF) — managed by Mercia Fund Managers — and an existing investor, IP Group plc.

IBEX’s systems (www.ibexinnovations.co.uk), which are fitted to existing X-ray machines, improve the quality of the images while reducing the dose of radiation that the patient receives.

They will assist the early detection of osteoporosis; other applications include security scanners and food testing, where they can detect plastic in chocolate bars and glass particles in jars of baby food.

Ian Wilson, who leads Mercia’s team in the North East, said: “X-ray technology has advanced very little since it was first invented in 1895, and the images are still very basic.

"IBEX is bringing X-ray systems into the 21st century, with enhanced images and improved patient safety.

"The latest funding will allow it to roll out its systems into clinics and hospitals and — as a result — improve patient care considerably.”
