Leeds-based SM UK (
www.smuk.co.uk), a £5 million-turnover automotive engineering firm, has won a £250,000 contract from local waste management business LSS Waste to install its high-tech Halo cyclist safety system, which incorporates live recorded CCTV, on a fleet of 75 trucks.
This follows on from a project to install the system in 25 vehicles in 2017.
LSS Waste’s HGVs travel mainly on urban routes, where there is a high risk of accidents involving cyclists at road junctions.
The Halo system is designed to correct the blind-spot that can cause problems, particularly when a large vehicle makes a left turn. The equipment is also an effective measure against false insurance claims.
