British Steel driving innovation with MPIScunthorpe-based British Steel (www.britishsteel.co.uk) is continuing to drive innovation in partnership with the Materials Processing Institute (MPI) (www.mpiuk.com).

The company has worked with the Institute since 2016, when it engaged in a programme to support the development of new and advanced steel grades, improve production processes and create plant efficiencies.

On a recent visit to the Institute, British Steel technical director Chris Vaughan was given an update on the research projects being undertaken on behalf of British Steel.

These include process improvement for the major iron-making plants, steel-making and continuous casting.

Mr Vaughan said: “We look forward to continuing to work with MPI to meet the challenges facing the UK steel sector, and to complement our R&D team’s efforts to drive sustainability through innovation.”

MPI chief executive Chris McDonald said: “The Institute is celebrating 75 years as a leading steel research centre, built on our extensive research capabilities, expertise and long-standing global partnerships with market-leading steel companies.

"Through our partnership programmes, we integrate with clients to deliver a comprehensive long-term plan of research and innovation projects.

"It was a pleasure to update Chris on our on-going projects to deliver improvements to British Steel, as well as discuss future research priorities and opportunities.”
