Siemens Mobility’s £200 million train-manufacturing plant in Goole has taken a major step forward, following the granting of outline plans at the end of last month.

The ‘state of the art’ facility, which would initially build more than 90 new trains for London’s Piccadilly Line, will occupy a 104-acre site in the Goole 36 Enterprise Zone.

William Wilson, CEO of Siemens Mobility, said: “We are delighted to have received approval from East Riding of Yorkshire Council for our outline planning application.

“This consent will enable us to develop detailed plans, which we will submit to the council later this year. Pending approval for those plans, we anticipate beginning construction in the spring of next year.”

The train factory is expected to include 80,000m² of manufacturing and related buildings plus stabling sidings, as well as a four-storey office building.

Siemens Mobility is planning to create up to 700 jobs (plus another 250 during the construction period), along with 1,700 potential jobs in the UK supply chain.

The company also plans to move its rolling-stock engineering and commissioning teams to Goole as part of the development.

Councillor Richard Burton said: “The granting of outline planning permission for Siemens Mobility’s new factory to manufacture and commission trains is another milestone achieved in this game-changing development for the town of Goole.

“As well as creating new skilled engineering and manufacturing roles, the multi-million-pound investment will also benefit the construction industry and then the supply chain, creating and supporting hundreds of jobs.

“The council is committed to supporting Siemens in whatever way it can during the development of the site and is looking forward to construction starting next year, pending approval of the detailed plans.”
