New machining centre boosts capabilities

New machining centre boosts capabilitiesSurrey-based Broanmain Plastics, a designer and manufacturer of high-quality technical parts used in the medical, automotive, aero-space and electronics sectors, has installed a new Hurco VM10i three-axis machining centre — supplied by High Wycombe-based Hurco Europe Ltd — to enhance the quality of precision components manufactured at its factory and meet customers’ delivery requirements (www.hurco.com).

Along with a new ZNC spark eroder system, the Broanmain factory in Dorking now has a range of equipment to undertake complex projects, test customers’ prototypes and take on repeat technical mouldings.

Adapting its precision machining and fabricating services to meet market demands, the company has been able to justify its investment in the Hurco machine after winning a contract to supply a local manufacturer of high-end spectroscopy tools.

Equipped with a 10,000rev/min spindle and a Renishaw probing system, the Hurco machine accomplishes complex and repeatable 3-D and 2-D geometries and delivers better surface finishes on intricate of components.

Its accuracy is enhanced by a TS27R tool setter and an OMP400 part probe.

Broanmain can now manage every aspect of production.

Operations director Jo Davis said: “It means that one team is accountable for an entire project, from moulding right through to rapid prototyping and milling precise elements into a part.

“It gives us the flexibility to undertake a wider variety of projects —plus the company can now handle materials ranging from polymer to copper, aluminium and other metals, so we can now repair and even prototype mould tools in-house.”
