Coventry-based Ledison Lighting has secured a second Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract after designing and manufacturing a family of long-lasting light-bulbs specifically for its warships.

Managing director Stefanos Kandilidis (www.ledison-led-lights.co.uk) designed the 5W, 8W, 10W and 14W high-specification LED bulbs, which provide 40,000hr of use and cover all types of compact fluorescent lamps and incandescent replacements.

Around 20,000 of these bulbs are currently being manufactured at Ledison Lighting’s factory in China before being transported to the UK in February to be installed on the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carriers, frigates and the new Type 45 destroyers.

Mr Kandilidis said: “The MoD approached us after we provided 100,715 tubes of LED lighting in 2018. It wanted long-lasting bulbs that could withstand vibration for use in generator and storage rooms.

"Bulbs generally provide up to 20,000hr of light, but our new bulb provides double that. The testing and design were carried out at our premises in Coventry, and we are now in production in Shenzhen in China.

“We are proud to have secured this contract, and we have produced a really bright light bulb that has set new parameters.

"We selected premium-quality integrated circuits and long-lasting capacitors that boost the performance and longevity of the product.

"The sealing process of the dome onto the aluminium housing of the lamp ensures a watertight connection that makes the bulb IP65-protected.”
