Sony UK TEC celebrates year of sustained growth

Sony UK TEC celebrates year of sustained growthPencoed-based Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) ended 2019 on a high, with significant growth in all areas of its business.

The company produces Sony professional broadcasting cameras and accessories, including the latest 4K broadcasting systems HDC-5500 and HDCU-5500, which are used to film sporting events around the world (www.sonypencoed.co.uk).

Sony UK TEC’s contract manufacturing has seen similar success, producing the 20-millionth Raspberry Pi in the UK last year. Seven years ago, the factory was asked to make 10,000 Raspberry Pi units per year; today, one comes off the production line every 3.5sec.

Manufacturing 11 different models of Britain’s best-selling computer, Sony UK TEC has witnessed a significant increase in production since introducing the Raspberry Pi 4 in June last year, with up to 32,000 being produced each day — up almost 100% on a year ago.

To support this increased production, new systems have been introduced, and others have been improved by the introduction of automation.

The company has also recruited for 104positions during the last year, and 71 of these vacancies were filled by existing employees, as a direct result of the training and development provided by its Sony Wales Academy.

Sony UK TEC’s managing director, Steve Dalton, said: “We are delighted to have experienced growth across our wide range of businesses.

"Between releasing several successful new broadcasting camera models and reaching the amazing milestone of having produced 20 million Raspberry Pi units, it was a busy and challenging year, and I am extremely proud of how the team has pulled together to achieve this success.

"Our technical capabilities are now better than ever, so I am confident that we will continue to build upon this success in the year ahead.”
