A new 7.75MW incinerator, due to be completed in 2021, is under construction in Bridgwater.
Funded by the Equitix and Iona Capital investment funds, the £72 million facility will employ up to 25 full-time staff and will process around 100,000 tonnes of commercial and municipal refuse-derived fuel (RDF) per year, which would otherwise have been destined for landfill.
Contractor STC Power — a specialist in thermal energy plants — will deliver the project, while Pinnacle Power has been appointed as the operations and maintenance contractor. The waste will be supplied by a firm called Geminor, which is a leading exporter and supplier of RDF.
Geoff Jackson, Equitix CEO (
www.equitix.co.uk), said: “This new project marks the latest addition to our growing waste portfolio.
“We see huge opportunities in this sector, and we are excited to be working with Iona Capital in developing this high-impact facility.”
The refuse will go through a combination of manual and mechanical sorting systems to remove recyclable materials. The remainder will then be shredded and fed into a gasification unit in a second building.
The gases generated by this process will then be used to raise steam in a conventional boiler for use in steam turbines, and the resultant electricity will be fed into the local grid.
