Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) welcomed Aviation Minister Paul Maynard at the end of January, when it revealed a £10 million redevelopment of the airport terminal (based on passenger feedback and due to be completed by the summer of 2021).
This will include a number of improvements, such as an expansion of the food and beverage retail facilities, new gate bridges and an expansion of the arrivals hall.
Robert Hough, chairman of Doncaster Sheffield Airport (
www.flydsa.co.uk), said: “The airport already has a modern purpose-built terminal building, but it is important that, as we grow, we continue to maintain our award-winning passenger experience.
"This announcement follows £3.5 million invested to create additional parking spaces to keep up with demand and a £2 million investment in our on-site solar farm, which will generate 25% of the airport’s energy.”
The Aviation Minister was keen to understand how Doncaster Sheffield Airport can support Government strategy to ‘level up’ the North.
He heard how a ‘shovel-ready’ scheme for an East Coast Mainline station at the site would extend the airport’s public-transport catchment area to around nine million people within a 90min travel time — equivalent to the catchment of Manchester Airport.
The creation of this station, requiring just 4.5 miles of track, would provide a public-transport link with towns across the region, and it could be delivered in the next five years.
