Advanced drill geometry from Sandvik Coromant

Advanced drill geometry from Sandvik CoromantTooling specialist Sandvik Coromant has launched the latest addition to its CoroDrill range.

The CoroDrill 860 has the company’s GM geometry, which has been designed to offer high-performance drilling across a
wide range of materials and applications, as well as ‘significantly improved’ tool life.

This new drill is derived from Sandvik Coromant’s R840, which is currently the company’s largest-selling drill in its solid-round-tools offering. The CoroDrill 860-GM features a new grade, an ‘innovative’ flute design, and a multi-layer physical vapour deposition (PVD) coating on the drill tip.

The materials accommodated include steel, stainless steel, cast iron and hardened metals, as well as non-ferrous metals, such as copper and aluminium — plus heat-resistant super-alloys.

The new drill features a double margin for optimum stability, increased core strength and reinforced corners, all of which enhance process security and the quality of the finished hole.

Furthermore, the flute is highly polished, which helps to improve chip evacuation and reduces heat build-up during the drilling process.

James Thorpe, global product manager at Sandvik Coromant, said: “We wanted to offer an improved solution for a vast range of industrial applications — and to streamline our product offering.

“We have achieved this with a single multi-purpose drill that gives superior performance across a range of materials and enables our customers to reduce their tooling inventory and overall production costs.”
