Helix achieves international AS9100 certification

Helix achieves international AS9100 certificationMilton Keynes-based Helix (a trading name of Integral Powertrain Ltd), the UK manufacturer of the world’s most power-dense electric motors and inverters, has been awarded the AS9100 certification for its quality management system (QMS) for aerospace.

The accreditation is an internationally recognised standard for aerospace and represents a key step for Helix in development towards Part 21 approval — allowing Helix to manage the certification of its systems for customers, in contrast to the current requirement for Helix customers to manage the certification.

The AS9100 framework ensures the quality of products by demanding stringent documentation policies and internal checks. This certification demonstrates a dedication to the highest possible quality and consistency in production, through controlled documentation, build process control, and inspection processes.

To attain the AS9100 certification, Helix refined its cleanliness processes and approval of critical build processes to ensure quality. As well as improving efficiency, this allows the manufacturer to identify and document any issues earlier and minimise wastage resulting from manufacturing errors.

Efficiency improvements

Learnings from this certification have been applied business-wide and led to knock-on efficiency improvements for the manufacturing of systems intended for applications across defence, marine, automotive and beyond.

Derek Jordanou-Bailey, chief engineer for aerospace at Helix, said: “This is an exciting step for Helix. AS9100 certification represents a commitment to developing our relationship and offering for the aerospace industry. Alongside improving our efficiency and quality management processes, this certification provides the foundation for developing our policies and management systems towards regulatory approval, which are essential for current and future programmes as we move towards flight certification with our customers and partners across aerospace.”

Already, Helix has supplied motors for use in game-changing and market-leading applications, including the Astro Mechanica supersonic jet, satellite launch providers, and eVTOL teams. By achieving AS9100 and pursuing regulatory approval, Helix demonstrates to the market that it is taking a serious interest in the aerospace industry and will continue to expand its offering in this market.
