Banbury-based Demag Cranes & Components Ltd has supplied three Steelmaster crane systems for Parker Steel’s new 14-acre steel-processing and distribution facility in Sussex. Parker Steel supplies structural beams and columns to the construction industry. The new facility at Shoreham Port complements its existing operation at its headquarters in Canterbury. The dock-side location was chosen to allow imported steel to be off-loaded directly into the stock yard.
The dock-side crane places the steel beams immediately under the Demag cranes, which move them to the appropriate storage area. The beams are then loaded onto conveyor systems that take them into the factory for processing, before next-day delivery to customers or other Parker Steel sites. In designing and engineering the crane systems, Demag took into account the harsh and potentially corrosive seaside environment.
Parker Steel’s Shoreham Port facility is due to be fully operational early next year, by which time it will have the capacity to handle 1,000 tonnes of steel per day.
