Pending Chinese government approval, Air China wants to operate an Airbus A330-200 aircraft from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Manchester.
The news comes shortly after Hainan Airlines confirmed plans for a Beijing-Manchester service, which will run four times a week from next June.
Air China was established in 1988 and carried 51 million domestic and international passengers in 2013.
