Energy sector consulted over EU exitThe UK’s energy leaders met with the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union on 17 October to hear about the opportunities that Britain’s decision to leave the European Union could bring to the sector.

This followed a statement made by David Davis in the House of Commons, emphasising his commitment to hearing the views of business and industry, so that they can help shape the UK’s negotiating position.

The Secretary of State was joined at the round-table meeting by executives from businesses and trade associations such as: BP, Shell, DONG, Siemens, EDF, SSE, Centrica, Oil and Gas UK, Renewable UK and Energy UK.

They discussed topics such as the electricity and gas markets, the nuclear sector, infrastructure investment and the supply chain. They all also talked about the opportunities that could arise from the UK being able to make its own decisions on pricing, policy, trade and regulatory requirements.

Mr Davis said: “Britain’s energy sector has made great strides over the past decade. We are world leaders in areas such as tackling climate change, renewables investment, and oil and gas innovation.

“Government and industry will work in partnership to identify and address the challenges and seize the new opportunities that arise from Brexit, meet our carbon targets and deliver an energy market that works for all.”
