Hitachi Rail Europe has announced that it will have nearly 900 staff working at its North East plant by next Easter.
The train maker says its workforce “continues to rise, as it increases production of its next-generation rolling stock for English and Scottish lines”.
The company — based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham — currently has more than 700 employees, after taking on 22 more people at the start of this month.
Nearly 50 of its workforce are manufacturing apprentices. Plant manager Darren Cumner said: “We are ploughing on with building trains for the Intercity Express Programme, and we have started ScotRail too.”
