German industrial giant Siemens has announced a contract to supply 48 sets of traction equipment for twin-cab diesel locomotives to Indian Railways’ Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi.
To be produced at Siemens’ Nashik factory in the north-west region of Maharashtra in India, these traction systems will incorporate IGBT (insulated-gate bipolar transistor) technology that will reduce the current required,
enabling the equipment to be smaller and lighter.
Tilak Raj Seth, CEO of Siemens’ Mobility Division in India, said: “The project showcases Siemens’ partnership with Indian Railways, as it combines innovation with responsibility to bring together the combined expertise of its teams”.
Siemens also won a contract from Austrian Federal Railways for up to 200 freight locomotives last month.
