Cross-section of XYZ machines on display XYZ Machine Tools (www.xyzmachinetools.com) will be displaying a cross-section of its machine range under power on stand S122 at Southern Manufacturing 2017; visitors will also be able to discuss visiting the company’s Devon headquarters to see the new LR range of linear-rail vertical machining centres and the UMC-5X — it’s first gantry-type fully simultaneous five-axis machining centre.

Being shown on the stand will be an SMX 3500 bed mill, an SLX 355 lathe and a 2-OP vertical machining centre, all of which feature the ProtoTrak control system. Alongside these will be the Siemens-controlled 710 VMC and CT 52 turning centre.

The ProtoTrak control system on the SMX 3500, SLX 355 and 2-OP provides simplicity and ease of use via a wide range of conversational cycles, making it ideal for one-offs and small batch quantities.

Moreover, the control can be operated without any knowledge of CNC, allowing operators to produce parts with a minimum of training.

These bed mills and lathes feature substantial Meehanite cast bases, Turcite B-coated bedways on the mills, and extra-wide vee-and-flat bedways on the SLX lathes.

The 2-OP has been designed to be portable, thereby allowing machine shops to introduce cellular manufacturing, freeing up more-costly machine tool capacity from pre- or secondary-operation work; and although this machine is compact, it offers a work envelope of 355 x 305 x 455mm, a 457 x 381mm table with a load capacity of 250kg, a BT30 spindle and an eight-position tool change — all within a footprint of 1,220 x 760mm.

The 710 VMC and CT 52 turning centre are among the most popular Siemens-controlled machines sold by XYZ Machine Tools. The VMC range of machines also features substantial Meehanite castings, along with extra-wide induction-hardened box slideways that are coated with Turcite B.

The standard specification of the VMC range includes a 20hp 8,000rev/min spindle and feed rates up to 20m/min in all axes. Meanwhile, the CT 52 has a 20hp 5,000rev/min spindle, axis travels of 185mm and 325mm in X and Z, and rapid-traverse rates of 20m/min.
