Associated British Ports (ABP) (
www.abports.co.uk) reports that “growth has increased” across its South Wales operations, with 12 million tonnes of cargo passing through its five ports there in 2016.
It said “notable” year-on-year growth had been achieved by an investment of more than £4.5 million in two new warehouses at Newport; Atlantic Shed was opened in January 2016 to accommodate growth in the steel sector, and 20 Shed was opened in September to support the animal feed and fertiliser industry.
There was also significant growth in ‘project’ cargo in 2016, with the Port of Swansea handling hundreds of wind-turbine components for several local wind-energy projects.
ABP South Wales director Matthew Kennerley said: “Continued investment in 2016 allowed us to ensure that the development of our ports is in keeping with the needs of both new and long-standing customers and the wider South Wales region.
“The five ABP South Wales ports represent a unique logistical network that allows businesses to grow, while using the bespoke services and facilities we can offer.”
