Type approval granted to uprated MAN engineMAN Diesel & Turbo’s L51/60DF engine (www.dieselturbo.man.eu) has passed its Type Approval Test, which was conducted from 17 to 20 October at the company’s Augsburg works (Germany) in front of the industry’s main classification bodies.

The nine-cylinder engine has an output of 1,150kW per cylinder at a nominal speed of 500-514rev/min. It can be used both as a marine main engine and as an auxiliary engine.

The engine was tested running on both fuel oil and natural gas. The test covered its alarm and safety system, the dual-fuel safety concept (including its pilot-fuel system), and the gas supply system.

Lex Nijsen, head of four-stroke marine, said: “The MAN L51/60DF — with its improved rated output and new features such as its gas-start capability — is a welcome addition to the ranks, with the flexibility to act in a main or auxiliary capacity.

"Whether operating on fuel oil or gas, I’m certain that its efficiency and high power output will be appreciated by the market.”
