Wheel and brake contracts for UTC

Wheel and brake contracts for UTCUTC Aerospace Systems (a unit of United Technologies Corp) recently announced that it has been selected to supply wheels and brakes to four airlines: Flydubai, JetSmart, Virgin Atlantic and Xiamen Airlines.

Jointly, these agreements cover more than 160 aircraft — including multiple Boeing and Airbus platforms — and represent more than $56 million in new business for UTC.

The announcement builds on the $180 million in wheel and brake orders the company announced at the Paris Air Show in June.

UTC wheels and brakes are widely used in the commercial-aviation industry. They have amassed more than 17 million ‘brake landings’ in service on the Boeing Next-Generation 737 and about 85 million brake landings in service on the Airbus A320ceo platform.

The company’s brake systems include its proprietary DuraCarb carbon friction material, which achieves an average 35% longer brake life than competing carbon materials.

For the 737 MAX and A320neo platforms, the 35% wear-rate advantage translates to some 500-700 additional landings, or about six additional months between brake overhauls.

Landing Systems president Jim Wharton said: “At UTC Aerospace Systems, our industry-leading product performance — combined with our robust and efficient global MRO network — provides a compelling overall wheel and brake solution for operators. We see ourselves as an extension of our customers’ operations.”
