While threading taps can be complex to manufacture, that does not deter the Thai manufacturer SK Precision (
www.skthai.com), which is developing its capabilities with the aim of being the first domestic manufacturer of taps.
The Thai government has been encouraging local companies to establish facilities; as a result, there are flourishing automotive and aerospace sectors that require a broad range of suppliers — including those offering tooling.
Tibordee Srikul, president of SK Precision, said: “We have been operating for over 20 years and know the local Thai market intimately.
“We saw an opportunity in tap grinding; until now, companies could only source taps from overseas suppliers, which meant long lead times and high costs. Our customers also want just-in-time products, so they can reduce stock and inventory costs.”
Mr Srikul says he did not want to be restricted to producing just one type of tap; after extensive market research, he decided to buy a Tap X Linear from Anca (
www.anca.com).
“Our investment in this machine, coupled with our experience, means we can now produce special and standard taps locally — but that is only the beginning. In future, I want to produce spiral taps, point taps, hand taps and forming taps.”
Anca says it was the first machine manufacturer to offer a single-set-up machine for the complete manufacture of taps. Its TapX Linear range of machines builds on this technology, with linear motors on the X, Y and Z axes.
Also featured are a rigid bi-symmetrical column design on a substantial polymer concrete base and linear glass scales. TapX can produce taps from M3 to M50, in high-speed steel or carbide.
