Major machine-tool developments

Major machine-tool developments Burlescombe-based XYZ Machine Tools Ltd will have several exhibition firsts on its stand, including two major developments, details of which will be announced closer to the show (Hall 18 Stand 640) (www.xyzmachinetools.com).

The key machine-tool debuts will be the recently announced LR and HD vertical machining centre ranges, along with XYZ’s UMC-5X five-axis machining centre.

The UMC-5X gantry-style simultaneous five-axis machining centre is available with either the Siemens 840DSL ShopMill or Heidenhain iTNC 640 HSCI control systems, which offer Traori (transformation orientation)/kinematic functions respectively during five-axis simultaneous machining for improved accuracy.

A full 500mm of Y-axis travel forward of the table is available when it is rotated 90deg towards the rear (component facing forward), allowing larger workpieces to be machined in comparison to many competitor models, says XYZ.

XYZIn 2017, XYZ launched its LR and HD ranges of vertical machining centres, both of which will be represented at the exhibition. In a company first, the LR series of machines features linear-rail slideway technology.

Models are available with 500, 750 and 1,000mm X-axis lengths. The LR specification includes the latest Siemens 828D control (with the option of the ShopMill Advanced software package) and an 8,000rev/min spindle as standard, with higher spindle speeds as options across the range.

The addition of linear-rail technology complements the box-slideway machines offered by XYZ, which are now designated the HD series.

This seven-machine range extends from the compact XYZ 660HD, with X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 660, 450 and 500mm respectively, through to the heavyweight XYZ 3010 HD with its axis travels of 3,000, 1,000 and 800mm (the Y axis is supported on six hardened box slideways for improved rigidity and accuracy).

The HD series will be represented on the stand by an XYZ 800 HD and an XYZ 660 HD. In addition, visitors will be able to see the HD machine construction, with a cast base and column displayed without any guards.

XYZ will also be showing a selection of turning centres — a TC 320 LTY Y-axis lathe and a CT 65. These models will be joined by a number of ProtoTrak-controlled mills and lathes, as well as the XYZ 2-OP portable vertical machining centre.
