Siemens Gamesa wins Taiwan wind farm contractSpain-based Siemens Gamesa (www.siemensgamesa.com) has won a contract to develop phase 2 of the Formosa offshore wind project in Taiwan to provide an additional 120MW of capacity.

The deal, signed with consortium partners including Macquarie Capital, Orsted and lead developer Swancor Renewable Energy, involves the supply and installation of 20 Siemens 6.0-154 turbines — plus a 15-year full-service agreement.

The contracts are awaiting the joint venture’s “final investment decision and financial close”, which are expected later this year. Installation of the turbines is due to start in 2019 and will expand the total capacity of Formosa 1 wind power plant to 128MW.

The Siemens Gamesa wind turbines will be installed on monopile foundations, which proved their suitability for the local sea bed conditions when the first two SWT-4.0-130 turbines were installed for Phase 1.

Andreas Nauen, Siemens Gamesa offshore chief executive, said: “We are proud to be involved with the Formosa development team in this pioneering project, which we started a few years ago with phase 1, and are now able to continue with an even more-advanced technology.”
