“If you were an engineer what would you do?”Canterbury Christ Church University (www.canterbury.ac.uk) and Primary Engineer Programmes (www.primaryengineer.com) launched the “If you were an engineer, what would you do?” competition across the South East earlier this month, linking primary and secondary schools across Kent, Essex and East Sussex with the university and local engineering firms.

The competition is intended to inspire a generation of young people from all backgrounds to seek a career in engineering, science and technology.

Rama Thirunamachandran, Canterbury Christ Church University vice-chancellor, said: “The competition taps into the latest design and engineering skills that most young people have and nurtures that talent by showing them that engineering can be a rewarding and world-changing career.

"We are delighted to be working with Primary Engineer Programmes as their partner for the South East, as well as the region’s primary and secondary schools and local engineering firms, which will be providing their engineers to be interviewed and to help with grading the competition entries.”

Last year, the competition involved over 37,000 primary- and secondary-school students around the country.

After the competition concludes in the summer with an awards event and a public exhibition, one of the inventions will be made into a prototype by the university.
