New EDM machine for Newport

New EDM machine for NewportBuckinghamshire-based Newport Toolmakers Ltd has taken delivery of a Mitsubishi MV2400S CNC wire-EDM machine featuring “revolutionary” cylindrical-drive technology. Supplied by HK Technologies, the machine has been set to work producing press tool punch-and-die sets, largely for the automotive industry.

Founded in 1995 by Kevin Brewer and John Nicol in a small unit in Newport Pagnell, Newport Toolmakers grew rapidly and moved to its current premises in Bletchley two years later. Wire erosion is one of its core manufacturing processes in the production of detailed and precise tools; until recently, the company was running two Mitsubishi machines that were reaching the end of their working life.

“We have no complaints with the performance of our Mitsubishi machine over the years,” says Mr Nicol, “and while they were still producing accurate parts, we realised that there was an opportunity to take advantage of next-generation technology. I looked at one or two alternatives, but I was really impressed by the new MV series.” These machines feature a host of engineering improvements, including a number of industry firsts.

Arguably the most significant is the cylindrical-drive technology, which is said to remove many of the pitfalls associated with linear-drive motors. At its core are tubular-shaft motors that move a number of axes, these prevent ‘cogging’ and ensure smooth and highly controllable movements.
