Europe: a manifesto for growth

Europe: a manifesto for growth The EEF has published a report warning the European Union that it must cut back on ‘red tape’ and introduce a ‘one in, one out’ rule for new legislation. Entitled Europe: a manifesto for life, the report calls for “reform from within, in particular a ‘leaner’ and more-effective European Commission in Brussels — one that is re-organised to prioritise economic recovery and sustainable growth.”

The EEF has said that manufacturers should “join in the debate” about the future of the European Union and “press political parties in the forthcoming European elections to be positive about the EU, while seeking reform.”

Terry Scuoler, the chief executive of the EEF (pictured), said: “These elections come at a critical time for the EU. We need all UK parties to come forward with a positive message, both about our role in Europe and about how they will seek to evolve its priorities and institutions. This will ensure that it is fit for the future, more accountable and focused on growth, all of which are critical for business and for voters.

“A major start would be a cull in the number of directorates, all of which have a mandate to propose legislation. This has created a policy and political machine that churns out new initiatives, directives and regulations. These are often developed in isolation, without regard for their impact on competition and growth.

"The European Council should look to cut the number of Commissioners and control their departments in a more co-ordinated and effective way. This would not only make them more accountable and growth-focused, but also provide EU tax-payers with better value for money.”
