Swiss-built high-performance turning centre

Swiss-built high-performance turning centreFeaturing the same kinematics as the highly successful Gamma 20 turning centre, the Tornos Swiss GT 26 sliding-head machine (www.tornos.com) features a cast-iron base that has been designed to offer even greater rigidity. The GT line-up comprises two models, one with five axes and the other with six.

The tool platen on the five-axis model has X1 and Y1 axes for bar turning; the counter-spindle carriage moves in X4 and Z4. This arrangement allows simultaneous turning work and counter-operations for optimum productivity. The six-axis version has a similar kinematic configuration, except that the counter-operation tooling block has a vertical linear axis, allowing it to double the number of tools available; eight tools are arranged in two rows of four (four tools can be driven). These four additional tools increase the options for performing complex machining on the rear of the workpiece — including cross-drilling.

The GT 26 can be equipped with up to 46 tools, of which up to 20 can be driven. Moreover, the platen can accommodate various special devices; these include polygon turning and thread whirling, as well as inclined milling and drilling tools.

The main spindle and the counter-spindle feature a constant torque rating that provides high torque at high speed. Furthermore, the GT 26 can run ‘conventionally’ with a guide bush or without a guide bush for short workpieces. This option reduces the length of bar remnant and allows standard-quality bar to be used.
