The UK’s Northern Rail has unveiled the first of its new upgraded electric Class 319 trains, which will soon enter service on the newly electrified line between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport.
Last year, the company received 20 electric multiple units (EMUs) from First Capital Connect (a First Group-owned UK train-operating company) and carried out extensive cosmetic work, as well as fitting improved seating.
Northern Rail managing director Alex Hynes said: “This investment is paving the way for us to deliver better services and more seats. Our investment in these trains demonstrates our commitment to providing a great customer experience, with a fresh new look.”
Earlier this year, the UK Government signed an agreement with Northern Rail and Trans Pennine Express to provide extra rolling stock for the North of England. Under this agreement, Northern Rail will also be responsible for maintaining — and increasing — capacity on key routes in the area.
