By having a common control system for a range of lathes and bed mills, and creating a training package that can be used with a 12-seat suite of PCs for off-line training in programming and simulation (based on the same control), Lymington-based Ajax Machine Tools International Ltd (
www.ajax-mach.co.uk) has been able to create a comprehensive machining training package that includes one of each machine type — for less than £35,000.
Managing director William Savin said: “We have worked closely with Siemens, using its Sinumerik 808D control system to take advantage of a common presentation for both milling and turning operations that reflect the needs of production facilities, workshops and tool-rooms.
"As a result, we are able to provide a package that allows students to have an in-depth understanding and appreciation of actual machining processes.”
The machines in the educational package are an Ajax Interactive CNC 720 bed mill with a working envelope of 720 x 380 x 500mm, a swivelling turret head (±90 deg) and a Siemens 808D control.
Meanwhile, the Ajax AJEU 200 Euroturn electronic CNC lathe has a 200mm centre height, a 42mm bore and 750mm between centres; it also uses a Siemens 808D control.
The off-line Sinumerik 808D PC-based training software presents the features of the Sinumerik 808D for both milling and turning and represents the actual machine tool operation; and because Ajax builds both machines at its Lymington headquarters, it can incorporate options, upgrades and requests into the education package, which already includes delivery, installation and on-site training — plus a ‘starter’ tooling pack and work-holding equipment.
