Designed to replace Doosan’s Puma 400/480-series machines, the company’s new Puma 4100/5100 range of heavy-duty turning centres is primarily aimed at precision-component manufacturers machining large parts for the oil and gas and automotive sectors; and compared with the machines they replace, the new turning centres are equipped with a number of productivity-enhancing features.
They are available from Leamington Spa-based Mills CNC Ltd (
www.millscnc.co.uk), the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland.
There is a total of 22 machines in the new range, allowing customers to specify different chuck sizes (12in, 15in, 21in and large-bore units), as well as a variety of machine capabilities and functions — such as long beds and driven tools.
Furthermore, the performance of these machines can be increased quickly and easily — without modifications — via special threading functions, tailstocks, steady rests and long boring bars.
The new Pumas have maximum travels/turning lengths of 1m (Puma 4100 machines) or 2m (Puma 5100 machines) and maximum turning diameters of 550 and 650mm respectively for the 4100 and 5100.
They are also designed to undertake tough machining operations, including heavy-duty interrupted cutting.
The spindles — rated up to 45kW and 3,000rev/min, depending on the model — are driven via a two-speed gearbox; the models with driven tooling (12-position turret) have a 7.5kW 4,000rev/min drive to the milling/drilling spindles.
Two-axis machines feature a 10-position turret. ‘Performance boosting’ features include EOP (Easy Operating package) and EZ (Manual Guide i).
