Linear-rail machines added to VMC range

Linear-rail machines added to VMC rangeBurlescombe-based XYZ Machine Tools (www.xyzmachinetools.com) has introduced three linear-rail vertical machining centres to its range. Designated XYZ LR, these machines start at £29,450 and are intended as the first step to VMC ownership.

The move into linear-rail technology featuring ball-bearing slideways will complement the existing box-slideway machines offered by XYZ.

Managing director Nigel Atherton says: “While the use of linear rails has been common for many years, we have resisted their introduction, as we felt that the technology did not meet our performance criteria in the same way that box slideways do.

“However, with recent advances in linear-rail design, those concerns have been laid to rest. These machines will allow users to maximise the improvements in digital motion control and modern cutting tools, while providing a cost advantage to customers by helping them to migrate to CNC machining-centre ownership at a reduced cost.”

The three machines are the 500 LR, 750 LR and 1000 LR, with the numeric designation relating to X-axis travel. Each machine features the latest Siemens 828D control (with the option of the ShopMill software package) and an 8,000rev/min 7kW BT40 spindle (10,000 or 12,000 rev/min spindles are available as options).

Other generic specifications include feed rates up to 20m/min in all axes and a 12- or 20-position carousel-type tool changer as standard; there is the option of a 24-position arm-type changer on the two larger machines. The table capacities are 250, 500 and 800kg respectively.

XYZ says that the specification of the three machines in the range will be sufficient to cover most applications in a typical machine shop, with the XYZ 750 LR likely to be the most popular choice. This machine has a work envelope of 750 x 440 x 500mm.
