Doosan Machine Tools has won the 2015 ‘Red Dot’ Product Design Award from Germany’s Design Zentrum — one of Europe’s oldest and most highly respected design institutions.
The award was won by the machine tool manufacturer’s high-speed high-precision FM 200 5AX five-axis machining centre, which was launched in August 2014. Last year, the company won the same award with its Puma SMX 3100 multi-tasking mill-turn machine.
Equipped with linear-motor and direct-drive technology, the FM 200 5AX can undertake high-accuracy simultaneous five-axis contouring; it is targeted at manufacturers machining a wide range of complex parts, including medical devices, automotive turbo-chargers and other precision parts.
Features include a thermally stable mineral composite structure that offers excellent vibration-damping characteristics to ensure high levels of surface finish and long tool life.
Tony Dale, technical director at Mills CNC — the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland
— said: “To win the Red Dot Product Design Award for two consecutive years is a considerable achievement; it reflects the scope and the scale of Doosan’s research and development capabilities, as well as the company’s on-
going commitment to designing advanced market-leading machine tools.”
