Romi DCM 620-5X at MACH 2016MACH 2016Designed for the simultaneous five-axis machining of highly complex components and available from Rugby-based Romi Machines (UK) Ltd (www.romiuk.com), the new Romi DCM 620-5X features a substantial cast-iron base that supports the B and C axes, column assembly and headstock assembly.

The work envelope is 620 x 520 x 460mm, while the B axis rotates from -50deg to +110deg, and the C axis offers a full 360deg of rotation; these rotating axes are driven by individual motors and feature clamping forces of 4,410 and 2,450Nm respectively.

The linear axes feature linear roller guides that are designed to provide high levels of rigidity and stability. The spindle, which features a direct drive,is rated at 18kW 12,000rev/min.

Furthermore, the spindle cartridge and the clamping flange between the motor and the cartridge are liquid-cooled for optimised thermal and geometric stability — particularly with regard to Z-axis positioning. The rapid-traverse rate is 36m/min, and the maximum programmable cutting rate is 20m/min.

A chain-type magazine accommodates 32 BT/BBT 40 tools with a maximum diameter of 76mm (127mm with adjacent pockets empty) and a maximum length of 250mm. Control is via a Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl, which has a 10.4in LCD colour monitor, a USB port and an Ethernet interface for linking to a factory network.

A wide range of options is available, including high-pressure through-spindle coolant (up to 70 bar), hinged-belt chip conveyor, a machining-area top cover and a mist extraction system. Automated part probing and tool setting can also be specified.
