Midland Aerospace, which makes airplane wing brackets for companies that include Airbus, GE Aviation and Bombardier Aerospace, is investing a seven-figure sum to relocate from Nottinghamshire to the Castlewood Business Park in Derbyshire. This is another coup for Derbyshire property firm Clowes Developments, which (through agent FHP) has already attracted the Co-op and automotive engineering firm Meridian Lightweight Technologies to Castlewood (at Junction 28 of the M1).
This development was prompted by Midland Aerospace needing to increase production to keep up with demand, driven by sales of Airbus aircraft in the Far East. Taking a 10-year lease on a 40,000ft2 unit means the company will almost double its manufacturing space when the relocation is completed next February. It also plans to invest in new machinery. Managing director Eamon Lyons said: “The new factory and offices will provide a unique opportunity to establish a world-class manufacturing operation here in the East Midlands. It will give us the opportunity to create additional capacity and therefore establish Midland Aerospace as a key player in the aerospace market.”
Midland Aerospace currently turns over around £10 million but anticipates a significant increase in revenues as a result of the move. Finance director David Winfield said: “At the moment, we have around 22,000ft2, which simply isn’t enough, so relocating is a real priority to increase capacity. There has been a steady rise in our turnover, and it is likely to be upwards of £12 million within
a couple of years.”
