Siemens to build a co-generation power plantSiemens (www.siemens.com) has won a contract to run a co-generation plant in Berlin.

The group will construct the natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power plant for energy-utility firm Vattenfall Europe Wärme AG. This will feature a gas turbine manufactured at the Siemens gas turbine plant in Berlin.

Planned to start operating in 2020, the facility will produce electricity and district heating for the eastern side of Berlin.

The plant will have an electrical generating capacity of 260MW and a thermal capacity of 230MW. The contract also includes a long-term service agreement covering the gas turbine-generator set.

Willi Meixner, CEO of Siemens Power & Gas Division, said: “We are very pleased to closely support Vattenfall in implementing the Berlin-Marzahn plant. Environment-friendly gas-fired co-generation plants like this can play an important role in Germany’s energy turnaround in Germany and in urban centres around the globe.”

Gunther Müller, a director of Vattenfall Wärme AG, said: “Our district heating systems contribute significantly to achieving climate neutrality in Berlin.

“The new combined heat and power plant will play a major role in these efforts, ensuring reliable, climate-friendly district heating for the coming decades.”
