Live machining demonstration Visitors to the 200m2 stand of Norwich-based Haas Automation Ltd (www.haas.co.uk) will be able to see cutting demonstrations on eight CNC machine tools, including: high-speed vertical machining centres; five-axis high-speed machines; mid-size verticals designed to take big cuts; high-productivity turning centres with live tooling and Y-axis capability; small-footprint mini-mill and tool-room machines; and — making its UK debut — the Modular Mini Mill (Hall 19 Stand 570).

With a work envelope of 406 x 305 x 254mm and a standard 10-tool ATC, the CNC Modular Mini-Mill offers 40-taper-machine performance in a small footprint — just 2m2.

Optional modules can be added to provide extra flexibility. For example, the coolant module is designed to prolong tool life, aid swarf clearance and achieve better surface finishes.

The production module features a faster spindle and increased rapids, while the high-productivity software module adds macros, spindle orientation, Wi-Fi, rigid tapping, visual programming, co-ordinate rotation and scaling. The four-axis module runs a rotary table or indexer.

A 5.6kW direct-drive spindle provides speeds up to 4,000rev/min as standard (6,000 and 10,000rev/min are options); cutting feed rates are up to 6.35m/min (12.7m/min is an option), and rapids are up to 7.6m/min (15.2m/min option).

Visitors will also be able see demonstrations of the Haas UMC-750SS universal machining centre, which is a 15,000rev/min version of the UMC-750.

The UMC-750SS is a five-axis 40-taper VMC with a work envelops of 762 x 508 x 508mm and an integrated high-speed trunnion table.

The 15,000rev/min in-line direct-drive spindle is powered by a 22kW ‘vector drive’ system and ‘served’ (as standard) by a high-speed 40+1-station side-mounted tool changer.

Haas points out that the 630 x 500mm trunnion table features standard T-slots, as well as a precision pilot bore, for ‘fixturing versatility’. The trunnion provides +110 to -35deg of tilt, plus 360deg of rotation. Rapid motion rates are 150deg/sec.
