Golden Energy chooses Rolls-Royce battery system

Golden Energy chooses Rolls-Royce battery systemRolls-Royce Commercial Marine has received an order to deliver battery-powered energy systems for two platform supply vessels (PSVs) — Orla and Frayja — operated by Norway-based Golden Energy Offshore.

The order includes the SAVe Energy system, which was launched by Rolls-Royce last month.

In addition, the two vessels will receive an upgrade of the existing Rolls-Royce (www.rolls-royce.com) ship design engineering package.

This will include an upgrade of the dynamic positioning system, the main switchboard and the ACON control system; coupled with a Rolls-Royce energy-monitoring system, this will provide a complete overview of energy usage onboard.

Golden Energy Offshore’s goal is to achieve environment-friendly and cost-effective operation for all its vessels, with the emphasis on energy efficiency, sustainability and a low emissions profile, in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation’s standard for a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).

The company is among the few offshore ship operators globally that are fully certified to ISO 50001 (Energy Management Standard), which involves having a framework for the measurement, registration, reporting and auditing of energy efficiency.

SAVe Energy from Rolls-Royce is a cost-competitive energy storage unit that includes a modular liquid-cooled battery system, which is scalable according to energy and power requirements; it also complies with international legislation for low- and zero-emission propulsion systems.

Rolls-Royce vice-president Ronny Pal Kvalsvik said: “SAVe Energy is well suited for upgrade projects such as the one for Golden Energy, where the system is delivered as a containerised solution that can be mounted on the deck of an existing ship.

“It can be used for ‘peak shaving and spinning reserve’, as well as for several types of fully battery-powered vessels — plus offshore vessels such as cruise ships, ferries, tugs and workboats.”
